Public Works Safety Gear
What Safety Gloves and Safety Apparel Are Best for Public Works Departments?
When it comes to Public Works, no one size fits all. Each department has different responsibilities from trash collection, road and highways, sewers and mechanics. But one thing we’ve learned over the years is that regardless of the Public Works Division, all Department order according to the season. Ordering the right materials to combat the weather can make long days in the sun or snow more bearable.
Most work tends to be done outside during the summer so having the right clothing on is important. Hi-visibility yellow t-shirts (SSTSL) help make employees more visible, but tend to be made of cotton therefore becoming very hot. Our most popular apparel is a breathable class 2 mesh t-shirt (SSTSCL2ML) that has a wicking material which helps keep employees dry and comfortable. If you are worried about the lime showing dirt, it’s also available with a black bottom (SCSTSCL2MSL). Since these shirts are Class 2, they replace the need to wear an additional layer like a safety vest (SCL2ML). Once the weather becomes cooler, a sweatshirt becomes important to stay warm when working. We have 2 sweatshirts available. One sweatshirt is hi-vis yellow with a black bottom (SSSCL3LZ), while the other is hi-vis yellow with black bottom and 3” wide reflective stripes for greater visibility (SS2CL3LZ).
Similar to our popular shirts, we have gloves that are specifically designed for the summer. When working outside your hands tend to sweat, especially when wearing leather gloves. We carry a leather work glove with a mesh orange backing so the heat escapes while working (SGL34111). No matter the job, an all-purpose work glove is hard to find. Our bestselling work gloves (no matter the industry) are our Ninja BNF Series. These gloves are made of a nylon/spandex shell for ultimate dexterity, touch and protection. The palm and fingertips are coated for added grip and support.

Public Works that deal with recycling facilities or trash collection can sometimes need daily gloves due to the dirtiness of the job. For these instances, we recommend going with something that will get the job done but won’t break the bank like our Polyester PU gloves (96699). Additionally, when dealing with trash collection or recycling, you never know the materials that you are picking up. Having a glove that is easy to take on and off and will offer protection from any sort of liquids is important (SGSS6521SC).
A problem we run into almost every year is customers complaining that lined winter gloves are too thick for their needs. For this we have our terry lined wind and waterproof work glove (N9690FC) that has proven to work for both highway and sewer work. The terry lining is sewn throughout the entire glove so the lining does come out when you take the glove off. Another work glove that is great to make sure your hands stay warm while working in the freezing temperatures is our Extreme Climate Super Insulated Work Glove (SG983). Not only is this glove water and windproof, but it features touch-screen friendly fingertips and an inner elastic cuff to keep out snow and ice.
Clean communities are something that is extremely beneficial to any neighborhood. However, finding the right gloves, safety vests, trash bags and trash pickers can be difficult. We understand that industrial strength work gloves and bags are not necessary and can offer the most economical ways to host a clean community event.
