Rock Salt doesn’t work (sometimes)

When winter comes in Philadelphia, we see rock salt everywhere. It is sold in hardware stores, carried behind pickup trucks on streets and in used in parking lots.

However, there is a common misconception on actually how effective this product can be. Below are the facts about Rock Salt and why we have other products that will work better!

1) When the sun is out, snow and ice will typically melt. However, the real problems occur’s when the sun goes down and temperatures begin going below the 20 degree threshold. Typically this is when freezing occur’s. Due to the chemical makeup of Rock Salt it is only effective in temperatures above 20 degrees. During the after dark freezing temperatures, Rock Salt is no longer an effective solution.

2) Rock Salt is not always the best option if safety for vegetation, concrete, or animals and pets are concerned. Rock Salt can sometimes weaken concrete walkways and parking lots causing discoloration, pot holes or other similar issues. Key ingredients such as Calcium Chloride, Calcium Magnesium Acetate are essential for bitter cold temperatures and are much safer for the environment. 3) Less is more – Rock Salt tends to be thrown down and therefore over applied. With our blended products, less is more. Which means using a high performance ice melt blend, you will use less material and, in turn, limit the negative effects of ice melters. With an ice melter that offers continuous melting effectiveness, less product is needed to be applied to offer the same benefits, while working to very low temperatures.

4) The colorant is also very beneficial as it assists the applicator to see where the product is being placed and ensure minimal product is applied off of the targeted surface area. The surrounding vegetation will be less impacted if the applicator can know exactly where they are spreading the ice melter.

With all ice melt, the product is only good if you can get it. Low pricing products tend to be gone quickly and it is important to partner with a strong supplier, like Y-pers, who always has product available.
