What Type of Staining Rags Should I Use?

There are many staining rag options for different applications.

There are few things more beautiful in the world of furniture than lovingly-stained wood…and few things more frustrating than not getting the stain you desire. Often, the question of getting the right stain comes down to having the right cotton rags, the most efficient and economic way to apply any stain.

With stain rags, you can be precise in your application, prevent dripping, avoid having to clean out spray guns and not have to worry about the blotching that happens when you brush stain.

However, not every rag is a perfect staining rag. Here are a few of the most effective options:

 1. Reclaimed white polo

Rags made from  reclaimed white polo shirts are the ideal, most cost-effective solution for staining. Because they are white, you won’t need to worry about color bleeding. If you want to be more cost-conscious, go with a reclaimed grey t-shirt rag, which is cheaper than white fabric, and also won’t bleed.

2. Amber knit rags

Larger than reclaimed white polo, these stain rags come in more consistent pieces and are pre-washed, which gives you extra absorbency. If you want more bang for your buck, you can tear  amber knits into smaller sizes to get more use.

3. New cotton white t-shirts

Traditionally the most common variety of stain rags, their white color makes them an ideal choice for people tackling a big staining project. Also known as “ lint-free rags,” their white color lets you clearly see the color stain you’re working with.

4. Paper/disposable wipes

While perhaps the not most popular type of stain rags,  paper and disposable wipes are super absorbent and leave the least amount of lint on the wood you’re staining. These wipes are also the most cost-effective solution, with each piece being the same size, cut and texture.
