Solution for nitrile, latex and vinyl glove shortages during the pandemic

During the Covid19 pandemic, societies across the USA are required to wear personal protective equipment, specifically masks. While there is plenty of inventory and supply of disposable masks and other types of face coverings, one item that is becoming increasingly harder to find are disposable gloves especially nitrile, latex and vinyl gloves.

The majority of disposable gloves are going to first line responders, governments and hospital facilities and rightfully so. But, as stay at home orders begin to lift it is also important for the general public to be mindful of how they are protecting themselves.

In order to combat this shortage, Y-pers is recommending a wide variety of gloves that can be washed and re-used. We personally have tested these gloves and washed them 5 times in a period of 1 weekend to ensure the quality is not jeopardized. Just like washing your hands with soap and water, washing gloves with laundry detergent should (according to the CDC) kill any viruses that are on them. Additionally, the gloves listed in this article contain either a nitrile or latex coating which is the same material in disposable gloves. This coating covers the palm and finger holes of the gloves for the same level of protection.

It is best to wash the gloves in warm water up to 194 degrees Fahrenheit and tumble dry at 131 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 minutes. Also, make sure the commercial laundry soap or detergent does NOT contain chlorine-based chemicals, bleach or dry cleaning solutions. OxiClean or equivalent is the preferred detergent.
