Every Facility Needs an Oil Spill Kit Clean Up Checklist
Every Facility Needs an Oil Spill Kit Clean Up Checklist
Regular absorbent pads are useful tools for cleaning up leaks or drips at your facility. But they’re often no match for more serious spills, which is why you should have a oil spill kit on hand.
Spill kits come in a variety of sizes and variations, from the standard oil spill kit to chemical and hazmat kits to universal spill kits.
Spill kits give you all the supplies you need to contain a spill in one convenient package, and good spill kits are packaged in a variety of ways to maximize their intended use.
Here is a checklist to make sure your company has the right oil spill kit on hand:
1. Type of spill
he type of spill kit you need will depend on the type of materials your facility uses. As we said above, you might need an oil spill kit, a hazmat kit for more aggressive fluids, or a universal kit, which is designed to handle oil and water.
2. Location
It’s important to have your spill kits strategically placed around your facility. Spills happen unexpectedly, so having easy access to a kit can save time and money, whether it’s in your plant, packed in a truck to deal with spills on the road, or marine oil spill kit for boats.
Ideally, you’d want to have a spill kit in the most spill-prone areas, although this isn’t always possible due to floor restrictions. Fortunately, we have spill kits that can be mounted on the wall.
3. Size
Once you’ve figured out the location for your spill kit, the next step is to determine the size you’ll need. We carry everything from smaller spill kits to 95-gallon drums.
Larger plants may require larger kits, in an over-pack drum. If you’re in the transportation or home fueling business you should go with a trucker kit, which is designed to fit underneath and behind seats.
When we talk about size, we’re also referring to the size of the spill. The potential for a spill is smaller in smaller areas, while larger areas will need a spill kit with more material.
We offer many sizes and options, including lightweight bagged kits, container kits with handles, overpack kits for stations and large mobile kits with wheels. We even offer spill kit replacements, so rebuying the drum, an unnecessary added cost, won’t be a concern.
What else should I have to deal with spills?
Our spill kits contain everything you’ll need to clean up the spill, but there also may be other supplies not included in the kit that you should nonetheless have on site, including:
- Procedures and signage
- Safety goggles/masks, gloves, shoe covers, aprons and coveralls
- Tools, such as dust pans and brushes
- Additional absorbent materials, like pads, socks, pillows, and shammy towels
Again, each of our spill kits comes in different sizes and shapes, so please contact Y-Pers today to discuss which option is best suited for your needs.
