Do Lint Free Rags Really Exist? 

We were talking with a customer recently who asked us about lint free cotton rags. And we told them what we always tell customers:

There’s no such thing as a lint free rag. While there are plenty of low-lint rags on the market, the concept of lint free rags is something of an oxymoron. Cotton is a fiber, and like any fiber, it creates lint.

Our customer was a bit surprised by this response, considering they had been dealing with another supplier who had been marketing their product as a “lint-free cotton rag.”

If you see a rag that bears that label, we’d invite you to test them. Take samples and shake them in the air. We will almost guarantee that lint will fly everywhere.

While we don’t carry any products that we’d call “100 percent lint-free,” we do provide rags that have been treated in such a way that’s made them low-linting or virtually lint free rags.

These low-linting rags include:

• New textiles

These are rags that have never been washed, with edges that haven’t been cut multiple times. An open edge around the rag will increase the fabric fibers shed at the edges of the garment.

• New textiles that have been washed

These rags are low-linting because they have been washed and dried. Drying captures a majority of the lint. (Think about the way the lint trap in your dryer works.)

• Paper wipers

While these aren’t cotton, paper wipes are one of the most popular disposable wipers in the industry. These virtually lint free paper wipes come in a variety of forms, including flat packed in boxes, on rolls of perforated sheets and in pop-up dispensers.
