Here are some of the most common questions we get about reclaimed rags.
Where do rags come from?
Rags come from clothing donation bins and thrift stores that have too many clothes. Our society is built around production new clothes and textiles and then getting rid of old clothes. That is where our company – Y-pers – comes in. We purchase these old clothes, separate and sort them, cut them, and turn them into rags. Basically, we give the old clothing one last life before entering the landfills. This process is called “upcycling” as we are taking the rags and using them again, but in a manner that is different than what the item was originally used for.
What types of clothes are turned into rags?
Items that be turned into good useable rags are:
Colored T-shirt Material – these items can be all cotton or a cotton blends (think of your t-shirt drawer)
Colored Sweatshirt Material –these items are old sweatshirts or sweatpants, which are sometimes called fleece
Denim material – items like jeans – both blue, white and black – can be turned into rags
Flannel material – long sleeve shirts, pajama pants, insulated liners
White t-shirt material – these items can be all cotton, or mixes of poly-cotton material. White t-shirt rags are good because they are more consistent and the color will not bleed
Grey T-shirt material – these items can be all cotton or mixes of poly-cotton material. Customers like grey rags because they are cheaper than white rags and the color will not bleed
Corduroy – yes, there is even a market for corduroy rags
How do rags come packaged?
Rags can come packaged in 2 ways:
Boxes – we can package rags in 3 different size boxes:
- 50-lb
- 25-lb
- 10-lb
Boxed rags are good for storage as they stack easily. They are also good because the box can be used to protect the rags from any outside debris. The boxes can also be reused for your own packaging.
Bags – bags of rags are a new trend in the industry. They come packaged in 25-lb bags and they are great because the bags of rags are see through, so you know exactly what is in in the bag of rags. They are easy to handle as well, as they only weigh 25-lb pounds and can be easily picked up. Plus the plastic is recyclable.
